Christchurch International Airport Limited
Refreshing the induction experience
Christchurch International Airport Limited (CIAL) has taken part of the induction training into digital format and they needed more hands to help create content to support this initiative. Like-Minded were eager to take on the challenge!
The team needed a course that introduces the airport and highlights the fact that it’s much more than just moving aeroplanes and passengers! They wanted to showcase the wide variety of activities that go on through Christchurch International Airport Limited (CIAL) in a way that was engaging and memorable, and was clearly presented in plain English.
Not only did we deliver the course they asked for, but as part of the process, we created a template for them to use into the future, when they no longer need external support to build their own modules, ensuring consistency and quality every step of the way.
Collaboration and process reign supreme
A good learning experience takes a range of people, all working together but all working in their own ‘sweet spot’. As with most projects like this, our learning designer worked closely with the CIAL subject matter expert to make sure all of the right content was highlighted, to the correct depth and breadth to meet the need. Hence the need for a solid storyboarding stage!
The storyboard had to be easy for the learning developers and graphic designers to translate into the intended visual experience. Sometimes it takes a couple of rounds to get it right, but getting it right is what matters!
Variety is the spice of life!
Templates set the foundation for quality
This course was built using Articulate Rise, so, first, we created a set of example elements in Rise that showcased the CIAL brand. From there, we created a template to share so that any learning designer in the organisation can build a course that looks and feels similar. Elevating the core building blocks by colour, images, illustrations and animations means that the CIAL courses don’t just look like Rise ‘out-of-the-box’ – they sing out the brand tune!
Following a template means a consistent experience for the learner. As they work through courses, they begin to know what is expected of them and what is coming next for them. This means they can focus on the learning itself, and not on ‘how to learn’.
Every project is a new opportunity to learn
Our jobs at Like-Minded mean that we get to see inside industries that we would never otherwise get to explore, which is what keeps our job interesting and varied on a daily basis. We know more about airports now, for sure! But it’s also an opportunity to push our tools to do more and do it better. In this case, we were able to stretch the standard authoring tool options and add subtle animations to lift the quality of each screen, making for a more professional appearance all around.
